WESTPORT — The formula for Staples on Friday night was simple: get the ball to senior running back Harris Levi.
That plan turned out to be the right one.
Levi led the Wreckers’ offense as Staples ran through Central for the win, 52-0 at home.
“He did a phenomenal job,” coach Marce Petroccio said. “He’s a guy you’ve got to feed the ball to, and I think we did tonight..”
Levi finished with 12 carries for 92 yards and four touchdowns for the Wreckers.
Central looked outmatched for the majority of the contest, especially with Staples’ ground-and-pound approach.
The Hilltoppers’ lone bright spot came from quarterback Jorel Johnson, who tried to right the ship throughout the one-sided affair.
“Jorel is an explosive kid,” coach Mike Farrel said. “We didn’t give him much help tonight, but he’s a good leader. He hung in there and he competed the whole night. Obviously, the score isn’t what we wanted. But he battled through it and kept playing.”
Levi said despite his great night, it was the defense that got Staples off on the right foot.
“A lot of it came from our defense,” he said. “They really set the tone for this game.”
Senior quarterback Daniel Thompson was effective at the helm of the offense, finishing 5-for-8 for 70 yards and a touchdown, while also carrying the ball seven times for 86 yards and a score.
SNAPPING THE SLIDE
The Wreckers’ win breaks a four-game losing streak that dated to last season.
HOME SWEET HOME
Staples has won 13 home openers since 2004.
“A lot of the credit goes to that offensive line, which was much maligned all preseason, so I think they did a tremendous job,” — Staples coach Marce Petroccio.
