Just when you thought it was safe to start grasping what’s what in the 2013 high school football season, crazy happened again Friday night.
Where to begin? Defending Class L champion Hand’s football season is anything but dead. Far from it. The Tigers emphatically proved that point with a 21-6 defensive victory over North Haven in front of a raucous crowd at the Surf Club. Sheehan took Cheshire to the brink. Guilford, once again, made West Haven sweat. Shelton needed to a blocked punt touchdown to get going vs. Foran. Xavier proved a point, holding Harold Cooper under 100 yards rushing in an emphatic win over Hillhouse.
The biggest stunner of the evening was Glastonbury’s 6-0 victory over Norwich Free Academy. We knew the Tomahawks had a capable defense… but a shutout? Against Marcus Outlow and last year’s Class LL upstarts? Insanity. Ledyard’s defense turned in an equally good performance vs. New London. And where’d East Lyme come from?
Westward, Newtown needed every bit of strength to defeat Jack Shaban and Barlow. The game, the last in Redding until turf is installed, wasn’t decided until the final moments. Masuk wasn’t utterly dominant, but still took out Oxford. Staples had a bit of trouble with Stamford before pulling away.
Woodland stayed unbeaten with an emotional victory over Naugatuck.
Ridgefield held off Notre Dame-WH in overtime. The FCIAC now leads the SCC 10-9.
Plenty of games ongoing today. Darien and St. Joseph tussle at 2:30. Trumbull and Norwalk face off at 4. Morgan, Hyde and North Branford are all in action, too.
