The two candidates for game of the week are Darien-St. Joe’s and Shelton-FP. All four teams are currently 2-0 so two teams here are going to get their first loss of the year. Given a choice I’d prefer that to be Darien and Prep, but I don’t think the boys are going to listen to me on that directive ! :-)

Prep and Shelton have been swapping wins for a few years now. This has the potential to be a great game if both teams come out firing with all cyclinders. Harrison scares me a little after his performance against the Gaels two years ago. But so far, the Gaels run defense seems pretty solid. This will be their biggest test yet. Tough to call a winner here as it’s going to Ben both teams most challenging game to date in my opinion.

In the Darien game I’d have to give the edge to Darien. Their quarterback, from what I’ve read is doing a good job in his first few games and their defense is usually good to begin with, but I think St. Joe’s is going to be hungry in this game. If they could defeat NC AND Darien this year they would certainly have braaging rights as the top dog in the FCIAC and in class M. We shall see if their performance matches their aspirations. Should be a great game. I might try to make it to that one as it’s not too far for me to travel. Enjoy the games. And Roll Gaels !

West Haven will beat them both.

    • MRWallace says

      September 16, 2018 at 8:22 PM

I would like to see both games. Can’t see the Prep game because I’ll be at the Hamden vs. Hand game. Hopefully can get to the Darien vs. St. Joe’s game on Saturday.

    • Gaels Fan says

      September 16, 2018 at 8:32 PM

Personally, I think Shelton and Prep both have a better shot at beating the Westies this year with the Godfrey boys now gone. I don’t know much about the Westies team this year so I have no idea how good they’ll be in comparison to last year’s team. Before they get there though, FP and Shelton will have to deal with each other ! And either way you slice it at that point one of those teams will walk away this Friday with a loss on their record.

    • LaTxGuy says

      September 17, 2018 at 5:11 AM

Absolutely those will be the games to watch and the winner can go either way.

    • LaTxGuy says

      September 18, 2018 at 12:27 PM

Not too fat for you to travel?? (In Connecticut i would not had thought anywhere too far. Both games will be big. I hope for Shelton and SJH . All worthy teams.

west haven is not that good they had troubles pre season with Glastonbury in scrimmage at NFA.

    • Hog Nation says

      September 20, 2018 at 4:00 PM

I see Darien really exposing the St . Joseph corners and especially their safeties. They do not tackle well and are often out of position. One thing the St. Joseph Defense and their defensive backs have been good at over the last 2 years is forcing turnovers.

Excited to see how Summers does against Darien’s quick and physical defense.

  2. ND from NJ says

    September 17, 2018 at 8:13 AM

@spb — I have heard that the West Haven/ND-WH game is going to be moved to Ken Strong Stadium because there is a problem with Veterans Field — is that true?

    Pequot Picks:

    H-K over Morgan
    Cromwell over Lewis Mills
    Valley over Cog.
    Rockville over Windsor Locks
    SMSA over Ellington
    Stafford over Gilbert
    Coventry over Canton
    OSW over Granby

    • Pete Thomas says

      September 18, 2018 at 9:11 AM

@HS FOOTBALL DAD……..agree, except i’m going to take Granby

    • Edward says

      September 19, 2018 at 10:09 AM

Agree but picking Gilbert over Stafford and Canton over Coventry as upsets.

    • HS Football Dad says

      September 19, 2018 at 2:45 PM

@Edward…seems like you are really hoping that Stafford gets upset. Didn’t you pick Canton over Stafford last week and predicted the score would be 35-0? You were kind of right on the score, it was 35-0 at the half, but Stafford was winning. Good luck with your picks this week.

    • Edward says

      September 19, 2018 at 3:09 PM

      HS Football Dad,
Yes I did pick Canton to upset Stafford, but I did not and would not make a score prediction – especially one like that on an upset pick.
Some of my picks are simply wishful thinking.
      Regards

    • Pete Thomas says

      September 19, 2018 at 7:42 PM

@edward is correct, it was HS FOOTBALL FAN that predicted the Canton score

    • hs football fan says

      September 20, 2018 at 12:02 AM

Same here. Agree with all the picks except for Granby/OSW. Granby wins going away in this game. Coventry beats Canton, but Canton makes it close, as they continue to improve in search of their 1st win in over 2+ years.

    • Edward says

      September 20, 2018 at 9:49 AM

Here is a prediction: Xavier at most wins 4 games this year, and more likely just 3 wins.

    • Pete Thomas says

      September 21, 2018 at 11:14 AM

@edward, i agree with your Xavier prediction, another tough year for the Falcons. They never have any breaks in their schedule. Even East Haven looks better than last year’s version.

    • Pete Thomas says

      September 22, 2018 at 4:49 PM

Wow did I go 8-0 this week?

  4. Wideout4 says

    September 17, 2018 at 11:40 AM

No more Palmer field for Xavier Home Games?

    • Sean Patrick Bowley says

      September 17, 2018 at 11:43 AM

      No.

    • Fred says

      September 17, 2018 at 12:53 PM

That’s a shame. The field was lumpy and the goal posts were pathetic, but Palmer has the best seating (right up against the field so you can see everything and hear the hitting), the best lighting (because it’s a baseball stadium), and the best concession stand of any field I’ve been to. Xavier’s new field is standard issue track between the field and stands and dimly lit. You won’t see me there.

    • ciacfollower says

      September 18, 2018 at 12:14 PM

      Fred,

It’s there, and CIAC has it listed as Thursday.

    • Gregg says

      September 20, 2018 at 1:29 PM

Yes, I see it. Not sure when or why is was moved to Thursday, the original schedule had it listed as Friday.

  6. ND from NJ says

    September 19, 2018 at 1:31 PM

West Haven vs Notre Dame (WH) has been moved to University of New Haven. Game time is still 7pm Friday night, at the blue football stadium

    • Sean Patrick Bowley says

      September 19, 2018 at 1:59 PM

we are aware. sadly ciac doesn’t list sites on this board, will have to add it.

  7. Old Sea Whiskers says

    September 19, 2018 at 4:10 PM

Some good matchups this week: I’ll take:

Shelton over Prep by a TD in a bruising game
North Haven over Cheshire (Cheshire looked good week one, but the wheels fell off. Gonna be tough to win 3 games with their schedule)
West Haven over NDWH by 2 TD
New Canaan over Trumbull in a close one
    Killingly over New London
ST. Joes over Darien in a classic. St. Joes has a bit more talent this year. May be a one point game.
Wilbur Cross sends Xavier to 0-3.

    • ciacfollower says

      September 19, 2018 at 7:46 PM

I think we’ll be surprised by a very lopsided victory in this “classic”…but who’ll it be, I’m not quite sure, lol. My only prediction is that the result of this matchup will throw the “top 4” into complete turmoil.

    • PDaddy says

      September 19, 2018 at 10:22 PM

For sure Hall and Conard (west Hartford) will lose since they can’t practice on Wednesday and their opponents can. Yom Kippur. Not sure if Amity and Staples in same boat. Practice matters . . . i think . .. . doesn’t it?? Congrats to Glastonbury and Enfield.

OLD SEA WHISKERS–you were almost right about the X game–serious problems with special teams–have to point the finger at the coaching staff–X was doing a good job but only for the first half–X is not a contender this year

  8. ecc says

    September 20, 2018 at 8:01 AM

    ecc picks
    Windham over East Lyme
    Killingly beats New London
    Griswold over Montville
    NFA big over Bacon
    Stonington over Ledyard
    Fitch beats Waterford

  9. COACH D says

    September 20, 2018 at 8:52 PM

I agree strongly with HOG NATION. I see Darien and their high octane offense exposing the St. Joe’s defensive backs, as they are light hitters and bite up all the time. St. Joe’s QB and their O line especially their interior beef, big Licursi, are the keys to game for Hog’s Offense.

  10. SWC says

    September 21, 2018 at 10:10 PM

Still not completely sold on Brookfield but I am sold on Henderson being the best back in the SWC
