In case you haven’t noticed all the hulking, all-american specimens weaving their way through the streets of New Haven, it’s the annual Walter Camp Football Weekend.
The best college football players and coaches of 2013 have sojourned to the birthplace of modern football where they will be wined and dined at Yale University Commons for the National Awards Dinner Saturday night.
It’s quite the scene, with pomp, circumstance, tuxes and everything. You can watch it live on ESPN3.
But before those festivities begin, the Walter Camp Football Foundation — in a noble effort to remember where it comes from — loves to honor our fair Connecticut footballers.
The No. 1 team gets to dress up and (literally) rub elbows with the All-Americans as the Kelly Award winners. So, yes, you’ll get to see Arkeel Newsome and the Chargers decked out in tuxedos for the main event.
But what about the other state champions? New Canaan, St. Joseph, Southington?
Well, they get to be honored, too, albeit with considerably less fanfare.
All of the state champions will gather at Anthony’s Ocean View on the East Shore section of New Haven at 9 a.m. today for the ‘Breakfast of Champions.’
It’s an All-Connecticut event where the Connecticut Coach of the Year, Player of the Year, Lifetime Achievement and the ‘UCAN Inspire’ Awards will be conferred.
You can watch it all go down here or at sportingnewsct.com
Here are your finalists and/or already announced award winners:
Coach of the Year award finalists: Tom Brockett (Ansonia), Mike Drury (Southington) and Lou Marinelli (New Canaan).
Player of the Year finalists: Stephen Barmore, Southington; Dario Highsmith, Middletown; Arkeel Newsome, Ansonia; Ervin Philips, West Haven
The Lifetime Achievement Award: Former New London head coach Jim Buonocore. Buonocore won four state titles and totaled a 209-94-8 record as head coach.
The Walter Camp Weekend sponsor Generation UCAN will present the “UCAN Inspire Award,” to Evan Skoparantzos, Westhill.
The 2013 Walter Camp All-Connecticut team will also be recognized.
