No doubt you’ve already seen this because this play was the talk of the Class LL semifinals between No. 2 Darien and No. 1 Southington.
Darien rolled past Southington, 49-7, in a stunner of a result against the two-time defending Class LL champions.
But of all the big moments for Darien, it was one of their worst that fans in attendance will forever remember.
Hudson Hamill, flying up field on a potential big gainer off an inside route, but then getting clotheslined — and we mean crushed — by a referee, WWE-style, late in the first half.
Darien was up 14-0 at the time and looking for more when Hamill was cut down by the referee and lost the ball. Southington recovered with a chance to get back in the game.
Hamill doesn’t even look for the ball after he’s dropped. He just looks up in utter disbelief as the referee just shrugged. Sportswriters couldn’t help but note that the referee’s tackle was the closest Southington would get to stopping Darien in the first half.
Preview of the lede on every story tomorrow: “The only one able to stop Darien on Monday night was a referee.” #cthsfb

Only way Darien slowed down is by open field tackle by the ref #cthsfb

Fortunately for the Blue Wave, their defense was just too tough. Their offense, led by Hamill’s three TDs, too explosive.
The eight state finalists will convene Tuesday at the Aqua Turf in Southington for the annual pre-championship banquet. Darien’s dominance will play second-fiddle to this wacky, wacky play.
