BURLINGTON — By now, Berkshire League boys basketball fans are well aware of league-leading Wamogo’s offense; Friday night at Lewis Mills, the Warriors’ (7-0) devastating defense shared the honors in a 72-35 rout of the Spartans (2-4).
The BL’s top two scorers — Spartan Josh Schibi (23 point per game) and Warrior Garrett Sattazahn (18.8 ppg) — showed their stuff in the first quarter. Schibi out-scored Sattazahn 8-7 to help keep Mills behind by just one, 16-15.
A Schibi tip-in had it tied 17-17 a minute into the second quarter.
Then Sattazahn, the Warrior captain, went to work in earnest. His two straight 3s, including a four-point play on the first, opened the Warrior gap and his team filed right in behind him.
By the half, Wamogo led 34-22. Schibi had 13 points; Sattazahn had 20.
Schibi (team-high 17 points) and Sattazahn (game-high 24) each scored just four more points in the second half, but Schibi worked hard to keep his team alive, while Sattazahn led the defensive effort to keep the Spartans down.
Leading a full-court press that keeps its constant trapping going after half court, Sattazahn shared individual defensive honors with Reid Turturo with six steals apiece in a team total of 24.
Wamogo held Mills to just one basket in the third quarter, 13 points in the second half.
Meanwhile, the Warrior offense kept churning out points, many of them on fast breaks following a steal. Sattazahn had nine assists in a team total of 23; Turturo added five more.
The score hit 44-24 at the end of the third period. Turturo (17 points) and Ethan Collins (13 points) joined Sattazahn in double figures.
“We’ve used our press all year, except against Shepaug,” said Wamogo coach Gregg Hunt. “We thought it would play into their hands.”
Schibi, an athletic 6-feet-5, is the Spartan workhorse, but, in a game in which he was often called on to try to break the press, Hunt was proudest of putting limits on him.
“We made him work real hard for his 17 points,” Hunt said.
