Seventh-seeded Fairfield Warde entered Tuesday’s FCIAC volleyball tournament quarterfinals an upset-minded team against second-seeded Greenwich, a team it lost to in three games last month.
The Mustangs accomplished their quarterfinal-round mission, upsetting the host Cardinals in five games, 3-2.
Warde, which won the match, 25-19, 25-23, 7-25, 17-25, 17-15, advanced to Thursday’s FCIAC semifinals, where it will visit third-seeded Ludlowe at 7 p.m.
In the opening set on Tuesday, Warde took the lead on Greenwich for good at 8-7 on solid serving by senior Kaitlyn Boland. A kill by junior Claire Edminster later in the set, gave the Mustangs a 15-8 advantage.
Greenwich (18-2) closed to within 17-15 when junior Lilly Saleeby recorded a kill, but Warde won the next three points, the last of which came on a kill by junior Alyesha Henry.
A block by junior Mia Rembish with Warde up 24-17, closed out the first game.
The visitors continued their momentum in the second game, jumping out to leads of 4-0 and 6-1. The Cardinals came back to take a 13-12 edge on consecutive kills from Saleeby, before the Mustangs won three of the next four points to go ahead 15-14. A tip by Henry gave Warde a 15-14 lead.
After Saleeby’s big hit for a kill evened the score at 23-23, Warde went ahead for good in the second set on a tip by Rembish. She then sealed the second set with a kill.
Greenwich, which posted a 3-0 regular season win over Warde, got its game in gear in the third set, seizing an 8-3 lead.
Strong hitting from Saleeby and Liana Sarkissian gave the Cards a five-point advantage.
A pair of Saleeby aces, a kill by sophomore Adele Sotgiu and a kill from senior Ciara Munnelly put the Cardinals up, 15-7 in the second game.
Sotgiu and junior Cornelia Roach helped pace Greenwich’s effort down the stretch of the second game and the Cards went ahead for good in the third game at 11-10 on a Munnelly kill.
Saleeby and Sotgiu put down kills to make it 17-11 and Roach had a big hit later in the set, enabling Greenwich to force a deciding fifth set.
The Mustangs prevailed in the fifth set, completing their upset bid.
