TJ Wainwright was not ready for the season to end.
Facing elimination, Wainwright turned in a dominating pitching performance while also having a big day at the plate.
Stamford Senior American Legion staved off elimination one more day, beating Brattleboro, VT 9-0 in the Northeast Regional in Worcester, Mass.
Stamford will play in the semifinals Saturday at 4 p.m. against the winner of Thursday night’s game between Lawrence and Shrewsbury, Mass.
Should Stamford win Saturday, it would advance to the Regional championship Sunday.
The winner of the Northeast Regional advances to the Senior Legion World Series.
Wainwright went 3-for-4 at the plate with a solo-home run, three RBIs and two runs.
On the mound he was stellar, striking out six while allowing four hits over six innings of work.
“He’s a bulldog,” Stamford coach Kevin Murray said of Wainwright. “He throws everything for strikes. He pounds the zone and he’s throwing like 85. His ball has lot of natural movement and he keeps guys off balance.”
Stamford grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Jaden Dawkins singled home Joe Gambino.
Brattleboro got two on with one out in the third courtesy of two Stamford errors, but Wainwright was able to escape trouble, striking out the last two batters of the inning.
Leading off the next half-inning, Wainwright hit a solo home run. Later in the third, Shane Hackett’s sacrifice fly scored Joey Skarad, putting Stamford up 3-0.
Stamford would put up six runs in the fourth, taking a 9-0 lead. Wainwright stayed hot with the bat, driving in Dawkins and Bobby Cribbin with a single in the fourth. Hackett also drove in a run in the fourth, with Stamford getting a few more as a result of two Brattleboro errors.
For Stamford, Skarad was 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored; Gambino was 2-for-3 with a run; Hackett had two RBIs and Dawkins was 2-for-3 with run and a RBI.
“We are hitting 1-through-9 right now. We are spreading it out,” Murray said. “Matt Wirz is hitting really well, both Joeys (Skarad, Gambino) are coming up with big hits and so is Shane (Hackett). We are having a lot of fun and we will come back out tomorrow and try to keep it going one more day.”
