TORRINGTON >> Vinal Tech/East Hampton’s Ryan Fazzino scored all three of the Hawks’ touchdowns at Wolcott Tech Saturday afternoon.
Wildcat Asante Maldon scored both of Wolcott Tech’s.
The difference added up to a 19-12 win for the Hawks (1-1).
“It was a tough one to lose,” said Wolcott Tech coach Jamie Coty. “I told them going in it was winnable, but we had to play penalty-free and turnover-free to do it.”
The Wildcats (0-1) had 45 yards in penalties (to 25 for the Hawks) with turnovers on an interception and a fumble.
The one that hurt most was a 35-yard run by Maldon for a touchdown in the third quarter, called back for holding. The score would have put Wolcott Tech out front early in the second half. Instead, the Hawks took over late in the period for a 12-6 lead.
Lost opportunity was disappointing, but no one needed a win more than the Hawks after opening with a 46-13 loss to Abbott Tech a week ago.
“It was a trying week after Abbott,” said Coach Joe Cefaratti. “We’re down in kids. We had to move them to new positions.
“Oliver Wolcott has a lot to be proud of. They’re good; the game could have gone either way.”
Wolcott Tech’s Maldon and Vinal’s Fazzino dominated the scoring column. The stat column shows more help for Fazzino than Maldon.
Maldon ran for a glorious 199 yards in 13 carries, not counting the 35-yard second-quarter refund.
“It was one of my better games,” the four-year veteran senior agreed.
Fazzino, also a senior, carried 23 times for 128 yards. Quarterback Austin Mann added another 120 rushing yards, often at crucial times in Vinal Tech/East Hampton drives.
“I see that green and I take it,” grinned the big junior.
In a game fought almost exclusively on the ground (26-13, Wolcott Tech, in passing yardage), Maldon struck first.
In a long opening drive, Vinal Tech/East Hampton marched all the way to Wolcott Tech’s 13 yard line. Then the Wildcat defense stiffened.
Fazzino got nowhere on first down; Wildcat Christian Berti sacked Mann for a five-yard loss on second.
The Wildcats took over on their own eight yard line. Brent Rainville (2/9) started with a five-yard burst. Then Maldon raced down the right sideline for 87 yards and the touchdown.
A motion penalty led to a blocked point-after attempt. Still, Wolcott Tech had the lead.
Vinal Tech/East Hampton tied it, 6-6, with no time on the first-quarter clock, in its first show of weapons.
From his own 35, Mann pulled a 17-yard keeper to get the Hawks to mid-field. Then Frazzini took over: 26 yards; 8 yards; 7 yards; a final five, 6-6.
The Hawks recovered a slippery squib kick at the Wildcat 20, beginning the second quarter.
The Wildcat defense held them out.
Tied 6-6 at the break, Wolcott Tech started the second half much like the first.
Maldon went 28 yards in the second down from scrimmage, then 35 for an apparent touchdown three plays later.
Holding brought it back.
Midway through the period, Mann and Frazzini started out again. Frazzini had two 10-yards runs and another for five. Mann went 28. Frazzini carried the final three, 12-6, Hawks.
Maldon caught them again early in the fourth: 34 yards; four yards; a final 10 – 12-12.
After a 12-yard opener by Mann, Frazzini did most of the work for the final score, in small, regular chunks ending in a four-yard run.
Vincent Langenfield kicked the point-after, 19-12, with 2:17 left in the game, then pinned the Wildcats deep in their own territory with a kick into the end zone.
The Wildcats couldn’t get back, despite Maldon’s earlier heroics.
“We’re built for four yards a carry,” said Coach Coty. “I don’t have anything for third and 20; we can’t get into that.”
“Both teams played good, clean football,” he summarized. “That’s all you can ask. We’ll get better.”
