Forget the ugliness of a postgame fight between Plainfield fans and New London football players for a moment, because that seems to be all the talk this weekend and, frankly, blech.
Let’s talk about the game.
The game was a beaut.
Plainfield rallied to beat the Whalers 21-17 in one of those games that can make you forget reprehensible fan behavior and all the bickering between which team or league is worthy and who’s not and fall in love with high school football — sports, really — all over again.
And it’s just too good to wait for our weekly Plays of the Week.
You must see now.
Watch the above video by Alday Films, which posted a full video including stirring halftime speeches from coach Pat Smith and the team’s captains on YouTube. Even before we got our hands on it, it had 1,100 views.
As for the details, Plainfield trailed 17-7 to New London, which was receiving all kinds of preseason accolades and state poll votes, but the Quiet Corner school rallied with 14 points in the fourth quarter.
It started with a short TD pass from Stephen Janknowski to Alex Gaudreau with just minutes left to make it 17-15. The defense held, thanks to a batted pass from Cody Alday, and Plainfield got the ball back with 1:06 remaining.
What next? How about a 50-yard HOOK-AND-LATERAL? Sure why not? Gaudreau took a short pass from Jankowski and tossed to Jordan Federer who raced down the sidelines to the New London 30. That set up perfection: a needle-threading winning TD pass from Jankowski to Alday with 42 seconds left.
“It happened so fast, but it was in slow motion … I don’t know how to explain it,” Alday told Steve Nalbandian of The Day of New London. “I saw the ball and told myself like 10 times to catch it, this is what you’ve always dreamed of.”
Bedlam. Pure joy.
Sadly, it was ruined by a bunch of knuckleheads after the game. Thankfully, we have Jankowski to put it all into perspective:
That was a great, clean game by both teams. It’s a shame our fans had to ruin it. Good game NL, I respect you guys to the fullest.
