Wednesday night’s CIAC boys basketball tournament action had nothing on Monday night. But we were still treated to one insane finish in the Division III semifinals between Avon and Enfield.
Despite a 41-point, seven 3-pointer effort from Enfield’s Jadon Archer, Avon was only down one — 75-74 — with seconds remaining. After two failed cracks at the winning bucket, Avon got one more chance when an Enfield player came down with a rebound out-of-bounds.
Avon had time for one more play, 2.2 seconds remaining. Riley Welter, inbounding from beneath the basket, threw high to Reiss, who caught the ball and shot it, mid-flight, for the winner, 76-75, as time expired.

Reiss finished with 23 points in the win, which catapulted Avon to its first state final since the Falcons defeated Fairfield Ludlowe in the 2005 championship.
They’ll face Waterford, a 77-68 winner over Prince Tech, in the championship on Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
