Coming off a loss to East Hampton to end 2016, North Branford was in good shape, up 61-58 with mere seconds remaining in its Shoreline Conference game vs. Old Lyme at home.
Old Lyme’s Dean Palenski made sure the T-Birds had to work overtime to earn their fourth victory of the season.
Old Lyme only had time for an inbound-and-shoot play for the potential game-tying 3-pointer. And with Parker Stone — who had hit four 3-pointers — drawing a double team at the top of the key, Palenski manage to slip away and found himself in great position on the left wing.
The senior caught the short inbounds, turned and launched a beauty that swished through the net as the buzzer sounded on a 61-61 tie at the end of regulation.
Watch the footage from @ShorelineBball on Twitter, who had courtside seats for Palenski’s clutch shot and captured the reaction beautifully (and in landscape mode! Nicely done).
But in the end, there were no worries for North Branford. The T-Birds defense held Old Lyme to a mere two points in overtime and pulled away for a 75-63 victory.
As a side benefit, the overtime allowed North Branford junior Brett Lequire was able to go over 1,000 points for his career a game earlier. He hit the mark on a foul shot and finished with 38 points.
Old Lyme fell to 1-4 with its third-consecutive loss.
