Greenwich just missed on qualifying for the FCIAC playoffs last month. The Cardinals finished 9-7 in the league and lost on tiebreakers to Ludlowe.
With a couple weeks to stew over it, the 20th-seeded Cards came out inspired against No. 13 and leagu rival Stamford in the Class LL tournament’s first round and, despite losing a modest lead earlier in the game, went to OT and pulled off one of the first, big upsets of the night.
Stamford captain Jay Devito had just tied this back-and-forth game at 52 with 21 seconds remaining. So Greenwich milked the clock before getting the ball to the 6-foot-1 Harkins, who faked left, stepped back and launched his long, winning 3 and then swaggered his way up court like Steph Curry as his teammates mobbed him back to the other end of the gymnasium.
“I wanted the ball at the end of overtime,” Harkins told the Greenwich Time. “I wasn’t having the greatest game, but I knew if I could make that last shot, it would make up for it.
“It’s awesome, it definitely felt really good when I saw the shot go in. I’ve had game-winning shots before, but not one like that. It felt good when I shot it — I knew it was going in.”

We were also given a birdseye view from @JaylaFaison, which shows just how far Harkins was behind the 3-point line: It was about a 25-footer.

Instead of packing up their gear for lacrosse and baseball season, the Cardinals — who had lost to Stamford 48-37 during the regular season — now take a trip to face fourth-seeded Weaver (last year’s Class M champion) in the second round on Thursday.
