Typically buzzer beaters are produced by singular heroics. Maybe a guard beats his man up top for the game-winning drive or, even better, the winning 3-pointer. Or maybe a forward will drive in for a winning layup or put back.
We can’t say we’ve seen many like Shelton’s buzzer beating 63-61 victory over Foran in Shelton’s Pink game to benefit Coaches vs. Cancer Saturday night.
Rarely do we see a failed buzzer-beater turn into a successful one with a steal beneath the basket.
The Gaels got a second chance at a last-second victory thanks to a boss hustle move by senior guard and captain David Berritto.
As younger brother Brian Berritto’s 3-point attempt fell well short with 3 seconds left in a tie game, David Berritto immediately swooped in from the right wing and poked the ball away just as Foran’s Zach Tavitian grabbed the rebound.
His co-captain Ryan Murphy had come inside from the left wing, too. The loose ball went right to him with a second left and he put it up for the amazing winner at the buzzer.

It was a needed victory for Shelton. The Gaels came in having lost seven of 11 games since starting the year 6-0. Shelton improved to 11-7 with two games remaining.
But it was an even rougher loss for Foran, which fell to 4-14 with its 12th-consecutive loss.
