Tuesday's Greater Middletown roundup: Mercy’s Kaleigh Roberts sets course record while leading Tigers to impressive sweep

Mercy sweeps >>Mercy senior Kaleigh Roberts set a new course record while outdistancing Wilbur Cross’ Danae Rivers, the New England outdoor champion in the 1600, to lead the Tigers to an impresssive sweep Tuesday afternoon at Mercy High School.
The unbeaten Tigers defeated SCC contenders Branford, 22-33, while also topping Wilbur Cross (22-37) and West Haven (15-50).
Roberts bested the old course record by nearly a minute, winning in 19 minutes and four seconds. Rivers was the runnerup in 19:31.
Mercy’s Bridgid Selfors and Mackenzie Pias also bettered the old course record. Selfors placed third in 19:59, while Pias finished fourth in 20:04. Hannah Albert was eighth (21:11), Janine Mouland was 13th (22:15) and Melanie Cirillo placed 14th (22:41) for Mercy (6-0).
Branford was led by Cyrene Nicholas (fifth, 20:13) and Anneliese Troidle (seventh, 20:58).
Middletown splits >>The Blue Dragons defeated host Maloney (15-50), but dropped a 15-46 decision against Berlin Tuesday at Meriden.
Middletown’s top finishers were Ashley Comeau (sixth, 23:13), Courtney Pusz (seventh, 23:13), and Jamie Gassman (10th, 23:29).
Boys cross country
Middletown wins two >>The Blue Dragons defeated Berlin (18-39) and host Maloney (19-40) Tuesday at Meriden. Mateo Alvarez and Ben Schaff placed 1-2, respectively, to lead the way for Middletown. Alvarez’s winning time was 17:32, while Schaff finished in 17:42.
Other top performances for the Blue Dragons included Evan Dunn (fourth, 18:24), Nate Roy (sixth, 18:40), Ben Lanza (seventh, 18:45), and Tyler Mann (10th, 19:16).
Xaiver sweeps >>The Falcons topped Branford (21-36), Wilbur Cross (15-49), and West Haven (15-50) Tuesday at Mercy High School. Xavier’s Zach Williams won the meet with a time of 17 minuites and 15 seconds, while teammate Jack O’Hara was the runnerup in 17:30.
The Falcons (5-1) also got strong performances from Dan Hergott (fourth, 17:43), Matt Welch (sixth, 18:26), and Ethan Rodrigues (eighth, 18:46).
Boys soccer
OLD SAYBROOK 2, HALE-RAY 1 >>  The Rams edged the Little Noises in a battle between two of the top teams in the Shoreline Conference Tuesday at Old Saybrook. Dan Murphy scored two goals, one in each half, to give the Rams a 2-0 cushion. Evan Lorentson tallied an unassisted goal Hale-Ray.
Zach Siniscalco had one assist, while goalkeeper Mike Rose made six saves as Old Saybrook remained unbeaten at 6-0.
Jake Linares made nine saves for the Little Noises (4-1-1).
MIDDLETOWN 4, PLATT 0>>Tom DiMauro had one goal and two assists, and goalkeeper Chris Rodo preserved the shutout with 10 saves to lead the Blue Dragons at Platt. Logan Pingree and Joey Pizzuto had one goal apiece, while Anthony Lagana and Umberto Spada each had an assist for Middletown (2-3-1).
Adrian Kurzatkowski made 14 saves for Platt (1-5).
HADDAM-KILLINGWORTH 6, EAST HAMPTON 3>>John Schuster and Nick Affragola had two goals apiece to lead the visiting Cougars to their first win of the season. Liam Blancafor and Zach Westerbeke each had one goal, while goalkeeper Elliott Lynskey made 12 saves for H-K (1-3).
The Bellringers (2-2-1) got goals from Kyle Stiano, Nick Costa and Jordan Casey, while senior keeper Austin Tierney made nine saves.
