Winning key points throughout and finishing each game strong, the Trumbull High School boys volleyball team improved its record to 12-4 with a 3-0 road victory over Greenwich in an FCIAC match held on Friday.

Junior Maverick Grillo recorded 10 kills and five digs to pace the Golden Eagles, who won the match by game scores of 25-19, 25-16, 25-22.

Senior Andrew Menjivar registered 29 assists, six kills and two digs, while senior Will DeFusco tallied eight kills, two digs and one block for Trumbull.

Trumbull has won eight out of its last nine matches heading into Monday’s matchup against host Stamford.

Greenwich, meanwhile, is 7-10 and needs to win one of its last two matches to qualify for CIAC Class L Tournament. Sophomore Jack Doss posted nine service points and six kills for the Cardinals, who celebrated their Senior Day on Friday.

“We played well against a strong Trumbull team that’s played together for a while,” GHS coach Peter Georgiou said. “Still, we played well and we have continued to show improvement. We have have seven wins this year, which is more than the past two seasons combined, so we are moving in the right direction.”

Kyle Zielinski’s tip closed out the first set for Trumbull. In the second set, DeFusco’s solid serving capped the set for the visitors.

Greenwich closed to within 19-17 on Doss’ kill in the third set. Senior Aidan Munnelly registered a kill a little later in the third game, bringing the home team to within 21-20.

Munnelly notched service points and seven kills, while senior Joseph Villaviencio had 10 assists, three digs and four service points for the Cardinals. Andrea Santos had 17 digs for the Cardinals, who play Staples on the road on Monday.

“Our passing has improved a lot this year and a lot of our players have been eager to get better,” Georgiou said. “They have put in a lot of hard work.”
