DANBURY >> Christian Alvarado made sure his final high school 800 meter race was a memorable one.
Saturday evening at the Danbury Dream Invitational, the Fairfield Prep senior won the two-lap event in a time of one minute and 52.60 seconds, which was also a school record.
“It’s great,” Alvarado said. “I really wanted this record and what better place to achieve it than the Danbury Dream Invite.”
Alvarado took charge in the beginning in a fast-paced race that was led by a pacer the first lap.
“It’s fun, that was the first time I’ve ever had a rabbit,” he said. “It kind of got into my head going out too fast, but I also felt I needed to go out that fast if I was going to go for the record. The last 400, I was just trying to hold on to have a good finish and get the record.”
Parker Timmerman of Brookfield was second (1:55.86).
Alvarado said running the 800 for the final time is a good tune up for the upcoming Southern Connecticut Conference Sectional and Championships meets, where he is set to compete in the 1,600, 3,200 and anchor the 4×400 relay.
In the boys’ one mile event, Wilton’s Spencer Brown and Farmington’s Matt Chisolm had a photo finish. The two battled for the entire four laps as they came down the straightaway. Brown inched ahead at the finish line to win the event in a meet-record time of 4:11.16. Chisolm was second (4:11.17).
In the first event of the evening, Hall’s Zachary Magin won the 2 mile in 9:24.22. Warde’s Aidan Fiol was second (9:31.73).
