TORRINGTON >> Torrington made short work of the state’s other Red Raiders, Derby, Tuesday afternoon in a 16-0 mercy-rule five innings.
“We have 10 kids on the whole team. We’re struggling to keep afloat,” said Derby coach Joe DiMartino.
The good news is all but three of them are underclassmen and former Wamogo softball coach Scott Marcuccio is a volunteer assistant.
Derby is 3-13; Torrington is 12-3.
Major accomplishments by Torrington pitcher Ali Dubois and third baseman Brittany Anderson lose a little glitter but still rank as major accomplishments in such a game.
Dubois (5 innings, 12 strikeouts, 1 walk), a sophomore, pitched her second no-hitter of the season.
Anderson, a senior, began the game with a strikeout against Derby sophomore Rianna Frosceno (4 innings, 14 earned runs, 13 hits, 2 strikeouts, 4 walks), then spent the rest of the game making up for it.
Even the strikeout turned into a run as Anderson (3-for-4) reached on a third-strike error in the first. She slammed home runs in her next three at-bats, toting up 7 RBI and 4 runs scored.
Torrington sophomores Alexis Tyrrell (2-for-3) and Sidnee Kovall also hit homers. Tyrrell added a double.
Brittany Young (3-for-4) and C.C. Carbone piled triples onto the barrage.
“We can pick out things to work on in a game like this,” said Torrington coach Maryann Musselman.
The Torrington Raiders have two more chances for that this week, with home games against 6-10 Sacred Heart Wednesday and 6-9 Wolcott Friday.
Derby hosts Wolcott Wednesday, then heads for more misery Thursday at Seymour.
Notes: Former Torrington pitcher Sydney Matzko, now North Carolina’s starting pitcher as a freshman, heads for Athens, Georgia with the Tar Heels Friday for the start of the NCAA Tournament’s regional play. North Carolina (36-14), a semi-finalist in the ACC Tournament, takes on Western Kentucky at 2:30 p.m. on ESPN3 while Central Connecticut goes against the University of Georgia.
