TORRINGTON >> Torrington girls basketball (10-3) played a world-beating first quarter, then coasted to a 53-22 win over Naugatuck Saturday evening at Torrington High School.
“We came out on all cylinders and then we took a break,” said Coach Mike Fritch. “That first quarter (25-0) was the best we’ve played all year.”
Naugatuck (6-9) drubbed 6-8 Derby 55-27 at Derby Friday night, so the Greyhounds didn’t expect to have to downshift at Torrington.
They ran into a buzz saw from the opening tap.
Seven Red Raiders contributed to a 25-point Torrington quarter with just two missed shots among them. Game high scorer Brie Pergola (10 points) nailed her first three outside shots while turning teammates into layup stars with three more brilliant assists.
The Raider defense was even more of a shock.
Forwards Sidnee Kovall and Pergola turned blocked shots into steals and fast breaks on the first three Greyhound possessions. Guard Alexis Tyrrell took over with three straight steals after that.
Naugatuck scored its first point of the game in the first minute of the second quarter, its first field goal almost three minutes after that.
That made the score 29-3 and a trip home look like fun.
“We didn’t come to play,” said first-year Naugatuck coach Ron Plasky. “Obviously, Torrington is better than we are. They’re an elite program and that’s what we want to be, but they’re playing at 80 miles an hour and we’re playing at 20.”
With just one senior on the team, Naugatuck starts three juniors and two sophomores.
“Our youth is no excuse,” said Plasky. “In this league, you have to be ready by the time you’re a junior.”
Still, with most of the Torrington starters on the bench, the Greyhounds came back to win the second and third quarters.
“We’ve given up a bad quarter in most of our losses all year,” Plasky said.
When a 12-1 Torrington fourth quarter rolled around on Saturday, it was way too late to count.
Naugatuck guard Molly Kennedy, who dropped 32 points on Derby the night before, was the Greyhound high scorer Saturday with 9.
