DERBY >> Torrington’s football team rolled to its fourth straight win in a 54-14 mauling at Derby Friday night in the rain.
The Raiders scored on the ground and in the air despite the rain. Tyler Marens and Nate Bresson combined for three touchdown passes from a perfect Connor Finn (4-for-4, 94 yards).
Marens and Ignacio Reynoso ran for three more.
“I hate running in the rain,” said Marens. “There’s no traction.”
Nevertheless, the Torrington Red Raiders had all the traction they needed from the get-go.
“It was a solid win,” said Coach Gaintan Rodriguez. “We played very well on both sides of the ball. The defense came out of the gate.”
Derby coach George French wanted to blame his own team.
“We didn’t execute,” he said, but admitted that his team is banged up, with three starters out.
“That’s no excuse, though,” French said. “Torrington is big and tough and they just roll over you.”
The rolling started on the very first series when Newton Frias keyed a six-play scoring drive with a 48-yard run. Finn finished it off with a 20-yard pass to Marens.
Torrington’s defense stopped Derby in four downs, then the offense marched back to the end zone with a final three yards from Ignacio Reynoso.
Marens made short work of the next one. Traction or no, he burst 44 yards for the final touchdown of the first period.
The offense never let up.
Finn started the second period with a 58-yard pass to Nate Bresson; Marens ran for another in 15.
Torrington penalties gave Derby the ball in close. Quarterback Jake Finnucan tossed a one-yard pass to Alijah Ellis to get the Derby Red Raiders on the scoreboard 36-6 at the half.
If the game wasn’t over then, it was with an early third-quarter pass, Finn to Bresson for another 18-yard score.
With the starters out, a slippery ball finally caught up with Torrington’s snapper early in the fourth. Two bad snaps put it in Torrington’s end zone for a safety.
Derby’s Tom Abel returned Torrington’s kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown, 42-14.
Sophomore Dylan Myrie and junior Donomick Phengkaen proved once again that mop-up time this year for Torrington is future time for them. Myrie sprang loose for 75 yards; Phengkaen, 38, for the final scores of the game.
Derby, 2-2, goes to Naugatuck next Thursday.
Torrington visits Oxford, also on Thursday.
