TORRINGTON — Torrington’s football team beat Derby 32-13 Friday night at the Robert H. Frost Sports Complex in a reversal of last week’s results for both teams.
Last week, Torrington coach Gaitan Rodriguez was disappointed with a big loss to Woodland; Derby banged out a win over Watertown.
Thursday, the results were flipped.
“This is the team I thought we had,” said Rodriguez.
“We tried to play our game; it just didn’t work,” said Derby coach George French.
Things went bad for Derby in the first quarter when Torrington’s Xavier Francis ran a fumble recovery 46 yards for a touchdown.
In spite of sophomore quarterback Zerion Montgomery’s excellence in the second quarter for a 13-12 Derby halftime lead, Torrington poured it on in the second half with Torrington quarterback Ora Curry’s second and third touchdown and a 42-yard ramble by Josh Maldonado.
