WELCOME to the Long-Stick Podcast, GameTimeCT’s new podcast covering high school lacrosse in Connecticut. This one’s been a long time coming, and we’re excited to get it started.
Your hosts are GameTimeCT editor Sean Patrick Bowley and Michael Fornabaio, who start our first season with a quick look at some of the top teams, great players and intriguing storylines for the 2019 season.
It’s already been an action-packed first couple of weeks, including last week’s showdown between No. 1 Darien and No. 2 Ridgefield, in a rematch of last year’s upset by Ridgefield in the Class L championship, a result that still resonates almost a year later.
Sean and Mike touch on that game, and several of the other Top 10 clashes — No. 3 New Canaan’s 9-8 win over No. 8 Wilton, Ridgefield’s bounce-back victory over No. 5 Greenwich on Wednesday, and several others.
Joining the guys in this inaugural pod is 15-year Fairfield Ludlowe coach Chris Parisi, whose team was 2-1 — including opening victories over Xavier and Cheshire and a loss to No. 1 Darien — heading into Thursday’s game vs. Conard (which wound up an 9-8 loss in overtime).
Parisi talks about his senior-laden team’s prospects this season and what it’s like to chase nationally-renowned conference rivals like Wilton, New Canaan and Darien, especially in a multiple-school town like Fairfield.
Parisi also discusses the growth and overwhelming success of his program’s annual Sticks For Soldiers 7-on-7 charity lacrosse tournament, played every Saturday after Thanksgiving, which has raised close to $900,000 for wounded veterans since its founding in 2006.
Ludlowe’s efforts for veterans ties in nicely with the team’s trip to the United States Military Academy at West Point to play Cheshire for the second-consecutive year. “The reason to go there is really to tie into the whole notion of tradition and service,” Parisi said.
