Welcome to the Long-Stick Podcast: State Playoff Edition.
Based on Wilton’s 4-3 upset over No. 1 Darien in the FCIAC semifinals alone, it was a pretty insane league championship week in boys lacrosse. It settled down, somewhat, with New Fairfield’s dominant SWC title victory and Fairfield Prep’s SCC championship, which were sandwiched around New Canaan’s thrilling first FCIAC title since 2013.
It all serves as a perfect setup for the 2019 state tournaments, which began in earnest with qualifying rounds on Saturday (and, in Wilton’s case, 12 hours after that crushing, 8-7, FCIAC loss).
Now that the first round matchups are set, hosts Sean Patrick Bowley and Michael Fornabaio break down what happened in the league tournaments — complete with some postgame interviews from the FCIAC and SWC — and take a shot at predicting who will be the 2019 state champions.
(Editor’s Note: Somehow SPB stealthily switched his Darien-Fairfield Prep final to Darien over Wilton during the course of the Class L breakdown. We’ve held his feet to the fire and he said he’ll go with his second prediction, since he closed the podcast by declaring Darien over Wilton. Thanks for confusing everybody, Sean.)
