WELCOME BACK to another edition of The Long-Stick Podcast, GameTimeCT’s weekly dose of high school lacrosse in Connecticut. The last week has been a busy one as boys lacrosse teams across the state wrapped up their regular seasons and we delve into the 2019 conference tournaments.
The SWC began Thursday night, the FCIACs begin Saturday, and the other leagues will be following suit beginning Monday.
It was a week where defenses ruled. Hosts Sean Patrick Bowley and Michael Fornabaio talk about Darien’s dominant effort in a 12-4 victory over New Canaan on May 11, and then Darien’s 11-9 loss to Brunswick of Greenwich in a long-awaited showdown on Wednesday night. They also discuss New Fairfield wrapping up its 15-1 season with a dominating defensive effort against Staples, and what lies ahead in the three state tournaments, the parings for which will be released next week.
This week’s special guest is none other than Somers’ longtime championship coach KEN McCARTHY, a 2017 inductee into the Connecticut lacrosse Hall of Fame, whose small school program has been a benchmark of boys lacrosse success for a quarter century.
The Ellington native and Springfield College alum talks about how he took over the program from founder Lee Pinney in 1993 and led it to astounding success: winning 419 games, reaching 25-consecutive state tournaments, winning five state championships in seven appearances over 27 seasons as head coach, including two of the last three seasons. He gives us some of his program’s best moments and the best teams to never win a title.
McCarthy also talks about this year’s team, which wrapped up a 15-1 regular season with a 14-12 comeback win over Waterford Thursday night (which took place after the recording). He talks about how his program competes with the ever-improving and expanding Catholic school programs in Class S. McCarthy gives us his thoughts on whether those schools of choice should be competing for the same state title as his.
