WELCOME BACK to the Episode No. 5 of The Long-Stick Podcast, your weekly dose of high school lacrosse in Connecticut.
The annual boys lacrosse showcase that is New Canaan and Darien is upon us. Saturday, 3 p.m. at Dunning Field in New Canaan, thousands will converge to see the annual grudge-match between the state’s two superpowers.
New Canaan has been in our sights for several weekends now because of their recent schedule. The Rams beat No. 4 Glastonbury two weeks ago and, last Saturday, rallied to defeat then-No. 3 Fairfield Prep, 15-12.
Now ranked No. 3 and still unbeaten in Connecticut, the Rams take aim at their No. 1-ranked arch rivals this weekend.
Joining us on the show this week is, of course, New Canaan coach CHIP BUZZEO, the seventh-year, three-time championship coach at New Canaan, his alma mater.
Buzzeo fell into the sport almost by accident and, despite some effort to choose another path — particularly in hockey where he was a two-time all-state player for coach Bo Hickey — lacrosse seemed to find him time and again, first as an all-state boys lacrosse player and captain at New Canaan and then a four-year letterwinner, captain and national champion at Princeton in 2001.
Buzzeo remembers those day playing for a who’s who of coaching legends. He talks about how he fell into lacrosse — yet again — when he made a career change, became a youth coach in New Canaan and, ultimately, getting the job as the head coach of the high school program.
“Lacrosse definitely changed my life, that’s for sure,” he said.
Before we talk with Coach Buzzeo, Sean Patrick Bowley and Mike Fornabaio take a quick look at the Top 10 and all the other big games around the state this weekend.
