WELCOME BACK to the final 2019 episode of the first season of The Long-Stick Podcast, your weekly audio dose of high school boys lacrosse in Connecticut.
Unless you were one of the winning participants, it wasn’t a particularly memorable Championship Saturday at McMahon (unless you’re a fan of insane, empty-net goals, of which there were many). It was more of a coronation weekend.
We had two repeat champions in New Fairfield (Class M) and St. Joseph (Class S). That much was expected. What wasn’t expected was Darien’s 13-3 obliteration of Wilton in the Class L final.
We thought, at least, it would be another classic like Wilton’s 4-3 upset of the Blue Wave in the FCIAC semifinals. Instead, we got another Darien coronation after a year’s respite and the resumption of the program’s march of greatness.
Bacon Academy also showed up in its eventual 9-3 loss to the Cadets in the Class S final.
Hosts Sean Patrick Bowley and Michael Fornabaio break down everything that happened, including some of the standout performers, some of the aforementioned insane goals and, of course, we discuss the final 2019 Top 10 poll.
Darien was No. 1, but there was some love for Class M champ and final No. 2 New Fairfield.
We also take a way-too-early look at who might be the top teams of 2020.
For now, we bid you adieu. Thanks to all the players, coaches and — yes — even the referees, for entertaining us. Thanks to all the listeners for joining us all season. ‘Til next year!
