Welcome back to the second edition of the long-stick podcast, your weekly look at lacrosse in Connecticut and the day after earning his 600th career victory with an 18-6 win over rival Wilton Thursday night, Darien’s legendary boys lacrosse coach Jeff Brameier joins the show.
Darien’s lacrosse program was transitioning from a club outfit to varsity in 1984 when Brameier, who’d coached just about everything else at the school and was actually pining for the baseball job, agreed to become the program’s first varsity coach.
At the time, Brameier knew little about the sport. But 36 years later, he is now the all-time winningest coach in Connecticut history.
He’s surpassed Wilton’s Guy Witten and New Canaan’s Howard Benedict and, last night reached his latest milestone.
Brameier talks with host Sean Patrick Bowley about how he went from a first-year boys lacrosse coach who knew next-to-nothing about the sport into one of its all-time greats within 40 years.
Under Brameier, Darien has produced nearly 90 All-Americans, 170 all-state players (including 13 players of the year) and he has been the state’s coach of the year five times.
Since winning an elusive first state title in 1997, Brameier’s program has become the state’s benchmark. The Blue Wave have won 13 state championships, including six-straight from 2005-2010 and four-straight from 2014-2017.
They took an incredible 76-game win streak going into last year’s final but were famously (or infamously, if you’re from Darien) upended by Ridgefield in the Class L final.
Brameier touches on all of these subjects and gives us a quick look at this year’s squad, which is 6-1 and ranked No. 1 in the GameTimeCT Top 10 Boys Lacrosse Poll.
You don’t want to miss this one. While you’re listening, you can watch a celebratory video created by Darien with a parade of former players and family offering congratulations.
