The first two weeks of the Connecticut High School baseball season has told us a lot. So much, in fact, that the second poll of the season is wildly different than the preseason Top 10.
Five new teams join the top-10 after posting strong starts.
Waterford, Darien, Hamden and Northwest Catholic have entered after combining to go 21-0 in the first two weeks and the four of them are right smack in the middle of the poll.
Darien and Hamden didn’t even receive a vote in the preseason poll, that’s how unpredictable this season has been so far.
Fairfield Warde is the final team to join the fray coming in at No. 9.
The only team that didn’t make a move was, of course, No. 1 Amity. The Spartans have reeled off six straight wins to start the season including a 5-1 victory over preseason No. 2 Staples.
Speaking of the Wreckers, they have dropped out of the Top 10 after going 3-3 to start the season.
Last week: Def. Hand 3-1, Career 18-1, Staples 5-1, Shelton 1-0, Lyman Hall 14-3 and East Haven 6-1.
Bottom line: The Spartans haven’t skipped a beat early on. They’re the only team to stay put from the preseason Top 10.
Last week: Def. Branford 7-3, New Canaan 19-3, Cheshire 13-3, Shelton 7-6 and Career 3-2.
Bottom line: There will be no waiting to peak for the postseason. The Titans have been as good, if not better, than advertised.
Last week: Def. Killingly 13-2, New London 12-4, Montville 10-1, East Lyme 10-5 and South Kingstown (RI) 7-6.
Bottom line: The Lancers sure can score runs.
Last week: Def. Fitch 9-3, New Fairfield 2-1, Daniel Hand 5-1, Brien McMahon 6-2, Fairfield Ludlowe 14-0 and New Canaan 8-0.
Bottom line: The Blue Wave have surprised many with one of the best starts in the state.
|5. Northwest Catholic||5-0||0||256||NR||M|
Last week: Def. Granby Memorial 2-1, Bulkeley/Weaver 17-5, Farmington 7-1, Glastonbury 9-2, Conard 4-3.
Bottom line: Justin Gallichio’s no-hitter is just one of many good pitching performances to start the season.
Last week: Def. Fairfield Ludlowe 3-1 (8), Notre Dame-West Haven 5-3, Fairfield Prep 4-0, Guilford 4-0 and Daniel Hand 7-6.
Bottom line: The Green Dragons are 5-0 for the first time in a long time. It’s their best start since beginning 3-0 in 2009.
|7. East Catholic||3-1||0||234||3||M|
Last week: Def. Stratford 8-2, RHAM 9-1 and Hartford Public 16-2; Lost to South Kingstown (RI) 15-5.
Bottom line: The Eagles’ schedule starts to heat up this week.
Last week: Def. Notre Dame-West Haven 8-3, Conard 9-7 (8) and Simsbury 9-3; Lost to Avon 5-3.
Bottom line: Time will tell if the Blue Knights’ loss to Avon is a good one or bad one.
|9. Fairfield Warde||6-1||0||215||NR||LL|
Last week: Def. Brookfield 11-1, Guilford 3-1, Bridgeport Central 17-0, Trinity Catholic 13-2, Weston 4-3 and Joel Barlow 7-3; Lost to Trumbull 3-2.

Last week: Def. Stonington 6-3, Killingly 14-6, Ledyard 9-6, RHAM 5-2; Lost to Waterford 10-1.
Bottom line: The Indians’ lone loss is to No. 3 Waterford.
