Good morning, and happy Thanksgiving.
Today thousands of fans will gather a local high school or stadium near them and watch their hometown boys (and maybe a few girls) play for team, school and town and make memories that will last forever.
It’s Thanksgiving Day football in Connecticut. The best sporting day of the year.
No matter if you’re playing for the postseason, playing spoiler or playing for pride, every game carries weight and significance, but there are few that stand out.
Twenty-five playoff spots have been claimed, meaning only seven remain up for grabs to complete the 2017 postseason.
The biggest games on this year’s docket begin in CLASS LL where Cheshire faces Southington in a virtual play-in game. But it’s possible neither will qualify if Fairfield Prep can beat West Haven to clinch its first playoff berth since 2013.
In CLASS L, New Canaan is fighting to continue its four-year stranglehold on this division’s championship when it takes on No. 1-ranked Darien in the annual Turkey Bowl at Boyle Stadium in Stamford. However, three Darien players were arrested Wednesday for their alleged involvement in an assault earlier this month, throwing a black cloud over the proceedings there. The Blue wave are the two-time defending Class LL champions.
North Haven’s game vs. Amity and Bunnell’s game vs. Stratford will help determine who clinches the final spots in Class L.
In CLASS M, Weston and Barlow engage in a winner-take-all play-in game. Wolcott is also fighting to clinch when it faces Holy Cross.
If Wolcott loses, Law can squeak in if it defeats Foran for the first time since 2007. Foran is playing for pride and for retiring coach Jeff Bevino.
Finally, Ansonia faces arch-rival Naugatuck in the first 9-0 vs. 9-0 battle of that series since the 1994 OT classic. Naugatuck is trying to clinch a Class LL top seed.
But it’s not all about playoffs. It’s about pride. It’s about pageantry. It’s about family. And, of course, it’s about football.
