TERRYVILLE >> Berkshire League defending champion Terryville won one and lost one in a three-way meet at Terryville High School Saturday morning.
The Kangaroos lost 42-27 to Class LL Manchester, then beat Holy Cross 63-12, only to discover that it’s not really about winning or losing.
“I just want the kids to wrestle their best,” said veteran Terryville coach Peter Veleas.
“Sometimes you’re not going to beat the guy across from you. Sometimes you can’t win, but you can also take a piece of the guy with you.
“I like Rocky. He gets beat to a pulp, but he’s still standing with his arms raised at the end.”
In high school, where there’s no boxing, wrestling comes closest to that image. Two kids out there with every eye in the gym focused on them – dominated or dominating.
In some ways, it’s tougher than boxing because a referee who detects a wrestler stalling gives points to his or her opponent. There’s no escaping to a neutral corner.
The score was 33-0 Manchester before Ian Poitras broke through for a Terryville pin at 113. Before that, Manchester’s Cooper Nodden started the rout with a pin at 160; Rafiq Conway followed with a decision, then a Terryville forfeit.
Two more decisions and two pins piled the score up at Poitras’ feet.
Fred Ellegard had another pin; Josh Tellier finished the Kangaroo scoring with a decision.
Against Holy Cross, it was easier because 10 of the 14 matches were forfeits, nine of them by the Crusaders.
Even then, Crusaders Aaron Valesquez and Albert Nieves took decisions. Jason Hume had a Terryville pin; Kangaroo Connor Levins won a major decision.
Win or lose, Peter Veleas was unhappy.
“We’re giving up too many falls; we’re not trying our best through all three periods,” he said.
“The younger guys are progressing, just not fast enough; you want the team to figure it out together – to help each other.”
In a sport in which an athlete stands or falls alone, a team standing behind the progress is all the more significant.
