NEW CANAAN — Staples’ head coach Laddie Lawrence figured his team would finish in the top four Thursday afternoon at the FCIAC Cross Country Championships. He just didn’t know where exactly.
In a competitive field, the Wreckers took third with 91 points while Ridgefield took top honors with 27 points. Darien was second (59).
“Third is nice considering how fast the course was,” Lawrence said. “Ridgefield ran a really great race.”
Ridgefield’s Trevor Hopper (15:15) edged out Darien’s Alex Ostberg (15:18) for the individual title and set a course record at Waveny Park. Will Bordash of Ridgefield was third (15:52).
Staples’ top finishers included Oliver Hickson, sixth place (16:09), senior Peter Elkind (13th, 16:20), Chase Gornbein (15th, 16:26) and Jake Berman (19th, 16:41).
“I’m definitely proud of our times and places today,” Elkind said. “Overall it was a very fast race. I was a little startled by the mile time. I think we finished pretty well. The goal was to finish top three and it worked out perfectly, we ended up third.”
For the Fairfield Warde squad, head coach Tim Foster was pleased with the performance from a young but talented squad. With just two returners in the starting lineup from a season ago, the Mustangs took fifth with 174 points. Senior Aidan Fiol led the charge with a 12th place finish (16:19), while senior Nick Gans finished in 27th place (17:01). Freshman William Brisman (17:35) was the next top finisher for the Mustangs, taking 42nd.
“I was impressed,” Foster said. “Certainly the (senior) leadership is a big part of it, but I give a lot of credit to the younger guys (sophomores and juniors). Our third guy was a ninth grader. I give the seniors a lot of credit for leading them, but the younger guys did a lot of work today.”
Ludlowe finished in 12th place as a team, as Josh Archer was the top finisher.
