It was a magical season for the Staples boys volleyball program in 2018.
A perfect 26-0 record as the Wreckers captured both the FCIAC Championship and Class L Championship.
Nine seniors graduated from that squad. Head coach Dan Cho also elected to leave.
As the 2019 campaign gets underway, Staples has six returnees and a new coach in John Sedlock carrying a huge target on their backs.
“The returnees and our newcomers all know that every opponent we face this year wants us,” said Sedlock, who had spent time as an assistant coach at Shelton and Darien and worked at Chelsea Piers Connecticut before making the Wreckers his first varsity boys volleyball head coaching job.
“I remind the kids every day that we will see the absolute best from everyone on this year’s schedule,” Sedlock said. “We can’t be lazy. There are plenty of kids in other high school gyms diving for balls just waiting to face us.”
It’s been so far, so good for the Wreckers. They have posted 3-1 road victories over Ridgefield and Westhill heading into Friday’s away match at Greenwich.
Last year, Staples edged Ridgefield in both the FCIAC and Class L finals.
“To beat Ridgefield was a great first victory. We knew it would be tough. But the kids executed the game plan,” Sedlock said. “It was a good test over a rival. A team that came out strong seeking revenge.”
Logan Carstens, Theo Gabor and Will Roschen are Staples’ three senior returnees. Juniors Peyton Anderson, Matt Epstein and Luke Roehm are also back.
