The Naugatuck Valley League softball championship final between No. 1 Oxford and No. 2 Seymour was postponed again. The title game will now be played on Friday at 6 p.m. at Naugatuck High.
The game was suspended Wednesday evening due to lightning. The contest was originally scheduled to resume Thursday at 4 p.m. but was postponed due to the threat of inclement weather.
The game is scoreless in the bottom of the fifth inning. Oxford pitcher Ashley Guillette is in the midst of a perfect game and has struck out 11.
Seymour and Oxford split during the regular season – each winning 1-0 on the road.
Kaley Kempf led off the fourth with a single for Oxford. Kempf went to second on a groundout and then advanced to third on Ashley Lombardi’s bunt single. Lombardi later stole second. But Seymour pitcher Raeanne Geffert struck out the next two batters to end the threat. Kempf’s single was the 99th of her career.
Geffert allowed a second inning single to Bobbie Stilson and walked a batter in the first. Geffert has recorded four strikeouts.
The game will resume with Oxford coming to bat the bottom of the fifth inning. Freshman Sam Kostek will lead off for the Wolverines. Kostek hit a run-scoring triple in the 14th inning in a 1-0 win over Seymour on May 13.
Unless there’s rain or lightning, the game will likely resume as scheduled Thursday, despite Seymour having an awards banquet at its high school at 6 p.m.
