NORWALK — Norwich Free Academy was making a long trek for a Friday afternoon nonconference game.
It was worth the trip.
NFA pitcher Bailey Comeau struck out 13 and fired a no-hitter as the Wildcats defeated host Norwalk 5-1 at Red Barry Field.
“She was dominant,” Norwalk coach Elaine Gratrix said. “She moved the ball well. She had us on our heels.”
NFA went ahead 2-0 with two runs in the third and doubled that lead with two more in the sixth.
Norwalk pushed its only run of the game across the plate when Brianny Garcia walked and later scored on an error.
The Bears had runners in scoring position three other times in the game, but couldn’t come up with a big hit — or big play — to get any momentum going.
“We had some opportunities,” Gratrix said.
The Bears slipped to 5-3 overall and remain 3-1 in FCIAC play.
Norwalk returns to FCIAC action on Monday, traveling to Bridgeport Central to play the Hilltoppers.
“I hope (getting no-hit) does affect us in a sense we come fighting back and use it to fuel us,” Gratrix said. “It’s not going to get any easier coming back into FCIAC play. We have to grow from it and get better.”
Norwich Free Academy improved to 6-2.
