Simsbury badminton looks for winning season
Blick’s teams have posted a gaudy 57-12 record during his stint as head coach, and finished 6-4 last year in the Connecticut Interscholastic Badminton League. Simsbury placed third in the State Open tournament at year’s end.
The top returnees to the team are Mary Pyatt, Megan Goodwin and Molly O’Donnell. The Lady Trojans have to find replacements for a number of top players who graduated, including state singles champion Cathy Baker, plus four seniors who were five out of the team’s six top doubles players in 2012.
“The key to our season is to stay injury free and develop new players as fast as possible,” said Blick. “Also, we need to improve as the season goes on with basically a whole new team led by two seniors.”
Blick added that Simsbury “Will go as far as the three M’s (Pyatt, Goodwin and O’Donnell) will take us. We should do at least the same as last year in the league, but I don’t know about the State Open because we are not hosting the event and we have a thin squad.”
Simsbury opened up its 2013 campaign at home Tuesday against East Hartford.
Trojan boys cross-country team hopes to contend
Three of the Simsbury boys cross-country team’s top five runners graduated but the Trojans have senior Phil Brown, junior Dan Schmetterling and a group of strong juniors to make a run at a Central Connecticut Conference title this fall.
Brown and senior Eric Barch will captain the squad.
Those elite runners that graduated were Jack Genovese, Kyle Heubner and Nate Lungarini.
“The top underclassmen worked hard over the summer and returned in good shape,” said head coach Mike Cohen, who has been coaching over a quarter of a century and whose teams have amassed a whopping 460 victories against 99 losses. “We look forward to building on that strong start as we progress toward the state meets at the end of this season. We always expect to be in the fight for the top.”
Simsbury opened up its season at home Tuesday, taking on Northwest Catholic and Hall at the Stratton Brook State Park course.
