Shelton knocks off unbeaten, top-seeded Wamogo in Division III second round

Staff Reports | March 8, 2019

LITCHFIELD — Melvin Kolenovic scored 18 points and Peri Basimakopoulos had 17 as No. 16-seeded Shelton knocked off unbeaten No. 1 seed Wamogo in a Division III first-round game Thursday night.

Shelton’s victory snapped a 23-game win streak for the Berkshire League regular-season and tournament champions dating back to last year’s loss to Cromwell in the Division V championship game. (Cromwell also unbeaten this year, lost its second-round Division IV game to St. Joseph on Wednesday.)

The win propelled the Gaels to the school’s first state quarterfinal appearance since 1990.

CIAC BOYS BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT SCOREBOARD

Shelton will face No. 9 seeded Amistad in the Division III quarterfinals Monday at Amistad in New Haven.

Garrett Sattazahn paced Wamogo with 25 points while Ethan Collins added 22, including five 3-pointers. The Warriors, who had a bye into the second round, finish their season 23-1.

Shelton, which went 11-10 in its SCC season (including an SCC tournament first-round exit vs. Cheshire), shot 17-of-22 from the line. Wamogo was 7-of-9. Basimakopoulos had three 3-pointers for the Gaels.
