The Seymour High School Sports Hall of Fame will induct its fourth class at a banquet to be held on November 5, 2016, at the Colonial Tavern in Oxford. Six inductees will be honored at the banquet which begins at 6 pm with a social hour and dinner to follow.
The honorees include the late Arthur Newkirk, an outstanding running back, who rushed for 2,758 yards, averaging 6.8 yards per carry. Newkirk was also an outstanding blocker, kick returner and receiver. He was a First Team All-Housatonic League selection and a First Team All-State selection twice. Newkirk graduated in 1972.
Matt Wozniak was a three sport star for the Wildcats. He was elected captain of the football team, the basketball team and the track and field team. On the football team his statistics placed him near the top in the Connecticut record book. In basketball he averaged 19 points and 13 rebounds, while in track and field he ran the 100, 200, 4 x 100 and was a high jumper as well. As a senior Wozniak received First Team All- Valley, All Housatonic and All-State for his efforts on the gridiron. Wozniak graduated from Seymour High School in 1975.
Joe Pawlak earned Varsity Letters in three sports at Seymour High School. Pawlak was an All-Valley and All-Housatonic selection in his senior year. He was the leading scorer and rebounder for the basketball team his senior year. He boasted a .383 batting average while playing shortstop on the baseball team and as the wing “T” quarterback was an outstanding passer and rusher who led Seymour to a 7-2 record. Joe graduated from Seymour High School in 1961.
Karen Cweklinsky, who graduated from Seymour High School in 1984, was a three year varsity player on the basketball and softball teams As a sophomore, playing shortstop, outfield and pitching, she received All-Valley honors with a .368 batting average. In her junior year she led the Lady Wildcats to a state tournament birth and batted .500 in the tournament, while gaining All-Valley and All-Housatonic honors. Karen’s senior year, as a pitcher she carried the softball team to the state tournament compiling a 15-5 record with 3 no hitters and an ERA of 1.05 and batting .432. She earned All-Valley, All- Housatonic and All-State honors that year.
David Tokarz was an exceptional three sport star who graduated from Seymour High School in 2000. On the diamond he had a career batting average of .427 and a .619 on base percentage. He was First Team All-Valley and All-NVL for three consecutive years and 1st Team All-State in 1999 and 2000. In his senior year he was selected to the CT. Coaches All-Star Team and was a USA Today Honorable Mention pick.
On the soccer team, Tokarz was a four-year starter, senior captain and a 100 point scorer. He was an All-NVL selection twice and an All-State selection in1999. He played in CT. High School Senior Bowl and was on the National Coaches of America All-State Team. On the hardwood he was an excellent defensive player and was a three year starter while gaining 2 nd team All-NVL.
Coach Paul “Spoony” Sponheimer, Jr., a 1969 graduate of Seymour High School, holds the career win record at Seymour High School with 210 which puts him among the State leaders. As a player for the Wildcats, Sponheimer was a physical presence on the hardwood, played outfield for the 1969 Class M Champion baseball team and was an All-Housatonic and All-Area linebacker in football. However. his greatest accomplishments came a football coach. In 29 years he went to the State Tournament 9 times, winning the class SS Title twice, the Class M title twice and was Class runner up 4 times. He coached 19 All-State players, 17 were Hall of Fame Classic All-Stars, 43 were selected Coaches All-Staters and 22 earned Scholar Athlete awards. All of these totals and the 207 of his players that went on to play football in college are testament to his coaching ability. Spoony was named Coach of The Year twice and gained the respect of the Community because of his leadership and efforts on the field and his contributions off the field.
