Wamogo 2, Gilbert 1 >> Wamogo won a 2-1 nail-biter against Gilbert Saturday morning, but the most exciting thing for both teams is they played the game at Fordham University in the Bronx.
“It’s been an eight-year tradition between Gilbert and Wamogo to play at Cooperstown every other year,” said Gilbert first-year coach and Gilbert graduate Don Crossman on his way back from New York.
“In the off year, they try to find some local venue that gives the kids the opportunity to play on fields at a higher level,” said Crossman. “They’ve played at places like Eastern and Yale. This year, they had a connection at Fordham. The assistant athletic director is a Wamogo graduate.”
The game itself lasted just an hour and a half. The Yellowjackets, led by Tim Smith (3 hits, double) and Chad Closson (RBI single) scored in the first inning.
Wamogo tied it in the third on an RBI single by Nick Brennan.
