Saturday's Litchfield County roundup: Northwestern girls basketball rallies to beat Thomaston

Northwestern 40 Thomaston 37 >> Northwestern’s Liz Newkirk hit a pair of free-throws with 11 seconds left to cap off the Highlanders comeback win against the Thomaston Golden Bears. The Highlanders were down by nine points going into the fourth quarter before they rallied to win by three. Emma Beltrandi led the way for the Highlanders with 17 points and 12 rebounds in the win. Newkrik added seven points. For the Golden Bears Morgan Sanson and Gabby Hurlbert each added seven points. The Highlanders are now 6-1 on the season and the Thomaston Golden Bears fall to 5-3.

Boys basketball

Lewis Mills 66 Shepaug 28 >> The Lewis Mills Spartans jumped out to an early 22-9 lead after the first quarter and didn’t look back crusing past Shepaug for the fourth win of the young season. Lewis Mills’ Danny Kryzanski led all scorers with 11 points in the win. Lewis Mill si 4-1 and Shepaug falls to 0-5.

Girls basketball

Terryville 51 Litchfield 50 >> The Kangaroos held off a late, fourth quarter, push by the Cowgirls to win its second game of the season. Bailey Doran, 17 points, and Olivia Pilarksi, 16 points were top scorers for Terryville. Tara Shakley led the Cowgirls and the game with 25 points in the loss. Terryville is now 2-4 and Litchfield is 1-6.

Torrington 47 Wolcott 35 >> The Red Raiders held Wolcott to just four points in the first quarter and that helped them cruise to an easy win. The Red Raiders came into the game with at 4-2 and Wolcott was 6-1 on the season. Leading the way for Torrington was Mia Barbieri who scored 13 points and Taylor Howe who added 11 points. The Red Raiders are now 5-2 and Wolcott falls to 6-2.

Nonnewaug 61 Wamogo 30 >> The Chiefs continue its dominance over Berkshire League opponents improving to a perfect 5-0 on the season after beating Wamogo by 31 points. Nonnewaug scored early and often, leading 31-13 at halftime. The Chiefs had nine different players contribute on the scoresheet, most notably Jessica Fengler who scored 16 and Courtney Carlson who added 14 points in the win. Nonnewaug is now 5-0 and Wamogo falls to 2-4.

Housatonic 68 Gilbert 28 >> The Mountaineers poured it on early against the Yellowjackets and didn’t look back winning its fourth game of the season. Housatonic is now 4-2 and Gilbert falls to 0-7.

Granby Memorial 55 Gilbert 18 >> The Yellowjackets fell to the Granby Bears. Gilbert’s Logan Smith pinned Granby’s Owen Kibby in the loss.
