Saturday’s Football Roundup: Jonte Roc, O’Brien Tech open with shutout

ANSONIA — Jonte Roc rushed for 106 yards and three touchdowns and passed for another score to lead O’Brien Tech in its 32-0 season-opening win over Prince Tech Saturday afternoon.

Roc had 11 carries in the game, including scoring runs of 15, 10 and 3 yards, and threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Bobby Hudak for the Condors (1-0).

The Falcons’ record fell to 0-1.

MANCHESTER — Harrison Ecklun’s third-quarter touchdown run proved to be the difference in East Catholic’s 28-18 victory over Avon in a CCC Division III opener Saturday. The victory was the first for East Catholic since 2016 after going winless last year.

Matt Byam ran for a touchdown and kicked four extra points while Stevie Chen and Noah Vail added touchdown runs for East.

For Avon (0-1), Jadon Folkwein ran for a pair of touchdowns and Daniel Quick added another TD run.

Owen Sherman ran for 84 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries as Hopkins won its opener, 24-0, over the Harvey School Saturday in Katonah, N.Y. Hopkins’ defense held Harvey to negative-31 yards with a fumble recovery and an interception.

Colton Engel ran 20 times for 101 yards, was 8-for-9 passing for 109 yards and also returned a kickoff for a touchdown as Stafford/Somers/East Windsor outlasted Morgan in a Pequot interdivisional game Friday night at Stafford.

Julian Rivas ran 19 times for 102 yards and two touchdowns for SSEW. Jeff Kology made eight tackles and had an interception. Tyler Gilbert added eight tackles, including one for a loss for SSEW.

For Morgan, James Nye was 19-for-39 passing for 364 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for a touchdown and had an interception.

“It was a heck of a game,” SSEW coach Brian Mazzone said. “Julian Rivas was a star and took over for us in the second half. We battled injuries and cramping.

“But Morgan, they were the show. James Nye was a stud. (Morgan coach Peter Nye) does a great job with them. I’m coaching my boys in flag football. I need to do a lot of work to catch up to him.”
