Sacred Heart Greenwich and Greenwich Academy each advanced to the semifinal-round of the NEPSAC Class A Field Hockey Tournament with quarterfinal-round victories on Wednesday.
The third-seeded Tigers posted a 3-0 win over sixth-seeded Deerfield Academy in the NEPSAC Class A quarterfinals, held at Sacred Heart. Fourth-seeded Greenwich Academy moved on to the semifinals by defeating fifth-seeded St. Paul’s School, 1-0, in Wednesday’s quarterfinals in a matchup played at Suffield Academy.
Sacred Heart, which won the FAA Tournament on Friday, will visit second-seeded Hotchkiss in Saturday’s NEPSAC Class A semifinals. Greenwich Academy plays top-seeded Phillips Andover Academy in Saturday’s Class A semifinals at a site yet to be determined.
In Sacred Heart’s 3-0 win over Deerfield on Wednesday, the Tigers were powered by a three-goal first half. Sophomore Beth Yeager’s goal gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead with 24:20 left in the first half.
Senior Ryan Smith tallied at the 16:58 mark, making it 2-0. Ellie Manriquez, also a senior, converted a shot with 15:10 left in the opening half, giving Sacred Heart a 3-0 lead. Eighth-grader Olivia Caponiti made six saves in goal for Sacred Heart, which has lost only one goal this season. Liv Mikesell made four saves for Deefield Academy.
“Today was a very intense match, Deerfield is a strong opponent and very well coached,” Sacred Heart coach Alex Gheorghe said. “In the first half, we scored three goals by putting pressure on them and the second half, we managed to keep the result.”
Greenwich Academy, the defending NEPSAC Class A champion, defeated their semifinal-round foe, Phillips Andover Academy, in the finals of last season’s tournament.
