The Immaculate baseball team has already suffered a season’s worth of close losses. Thursday against one of the top teams in the SWC, the Mustangs finally returned the favor.
TJ Fahey’s game-winning RBI in the eighth inning sent Immaculate to a 3-2 win over New Fairfield to earn its first league win of the season. The Mustangs improved to 3-6 with the win; Immaculate lost to New Fairfield 7-4 in non-league action.
Mike Malgieri threw seven innings, giving up two runs. Joey Rios pitched a scoreless eighth inning to earn the win.
“It feels gratifying that all the hard work the guys putting in on a daily basis is paying off,” said Mustangs coach Dean White. “Hopefully this is what we needed. … We’ve had a tough schedule to start the season.”
The Mustangs snapped a three-game losing stretch during which four runs were scored.
“Our pitchers have kept us in games and we’ve played solid defensively overall,” White said. “Our timely hitting has a been problem this year. We’ve been getting a lot of contributions up and down; we’ve had guys stepping in for guys who got hurt.”
