BROOKFIELD — The Brookfield football team took a massive step towards the Class M playoffs Friday as a 32-12 win over Weston lifted the Bobcats to 7-2 with one game remaining.
Brookfield entered the week outside the playoff picture, but results elsewhere have suddenly vaulted the Bobcats into a position where they control their own destiny. The Bobcats currently sit in the No. 6 spot in the rankings.
“We’re proud of where we’re at,” Brookfield coach Rich Angarano said. “We understand we have to beat Bethel (on Thanksgiving morning). I can only deal with what we can control. We’ve only lost to two very good teams in North Haven and Newtown.”
The two teams were both 6-2 heading into the contest, but Brookfield’s rushing attack won the day. Senior Conor McVey rushed for a pair of long touchdowns — 80 and 89 yards — while Nick Henderson had three touchdowns — two rushing and one fumble return for a touchdown.
Henderson carried 23 times for 183 yards while McVey finished the night with nine carries for 179 yards.
“Our team blocked well, but more importantly both Connor and Nick ran and broke tackles,” Angarano said. “When they get in the open field their speed is a lot to deal with.”
Gavin Borges added a sack for Brookfield, which built upon the momentum from playing Newtown tough in a 21-0 loss last week. Angarano added that his defense has strongly improved under coordinator Bryan Muller.
