The high school boys swimming season began Thursday with a meet taking place between two top-notch teams, with Greenwich and Ridgefield testing their skills against each other.
Winning 11 of 12 events, visiting Ridgefield defeated powerhouse Greenwich 99-86. The loss was a rare one in the FCIAC for the Cardinals.
The meet began with Ridgefield’s 200-yard medley relay team of Kieran Smith, Andrew Bornstein, Luke Hruska and Will Bryant posting a winning time of 1:37.97. Greenwich placed second in 1:42.64.
The 200-yard freestyle saw Connor Hunt of the Tigers touch the wall first in 1:46.97. Andres Ruh of Greenwich was second in 1:51.45.
In the 200 individual medley, Bornstein took first in 1:58.45. Stephan Todorovic placed second for Greenwich in 1:59.64, followed by teammate Ryan Lynch (2:03.37).
Smith gave Ridgefield a first-place finish in the 50 freestyle, clocking in at 21.80. Finishing second for the Tigers was Bryant, who posted a time of 22.69.
Ridgefield held a 34-28 lead on Greenwich after the 50 freestyle.
On the 1-meter diving board, Sergei Shaw of Greenwich earned a first-place finish with a score of 279.80. Greenwich took a 39-38 lead after the diving event, but Ridgefield regained the lead at 48-45 after Hruska won the 100 butterfly in 54.55. Linny O’Malley of the Tigers took second in 55.28. James Pascale from Greenwich was third.
In the 100 freestyle, Bryant of the Tigers registered a winning time of 50.03. Greenwich was second and Ridgefield held a 55-54 lead.
Smith led practically the whole way in winning the 500 freestyle for Ridgefield in 4:34.71. Connor Hunt was the runner-up in 4:41.47.
The 200 freestyle relay was a tight race that saw the Tigers edge the Cards for the top spot. Hruska, O’Malley, Hunt, and Bryant won the event in 1:32.31. Greenwich was second in 1:32.85.
Hruska won the 100 backstroke in 55.85, while Greenwich’s Ryan Lynch was second in 56.63. Ridgefield led 82-73 after the backstroke.
Bornstein was the 100 breaststroke winner in 1:00.11, while Lynch took second in 1:02.74. Matt Li of Greenwich was third in 1:03.35. The meet concluded with Ridgefield posting a first-place time of 3:18.45 in the 400 freestyle relay. Greenwich was the runner-up (3:25.83).
