Dave Parness confirmed in a text message that he has officially been named the boys basketball coach at Maloney in Meriden, replacing Howie Hewitt, who resigned in May to take the girls basketball job at Southington High.
The appointment became official Tuesday night, first reported by the Meriden Record Journal.
“Just really excited for the opportunity and challenge of coaching basketball in the CCC and to be able to coach in the same school where I teach (science),” Parness said in a text message. “It will be great being able to be a resource to the players on the team, not just during the season, but throughout their entire academic year and career at Maloney High School.”
Parness as an assistant under Hewitt last season. He previously coached at North Branford for five seasons, resigning following the 2017-18 season.
Parness said he will stay on as head boys soccer coach. He led the Spartans to the 2018 Class L state final, falling to Hand.
Hewitt coached Maloney for 33 seasons. He also was the longtime baseball coach and athletic director there.
