WEST HAVEN — For the second straight game the Notre Dame-West Haven boys hockey team played a complete, dominating game and this time it was against SCC/SWC Division I rival Notre Dame-Fairfield.
And it’s a good thing since the Green Knights faced a hot goalie for the Lancers.
Despite 31 saves from Lancers goalie Kacy Adams, Mike Bencivengo scored twice and Brendan Crowley had 19 saves to lead No. 2 Notre Dame-West Haven to a 5-0 win over No. 8 Notre Dame-Fairfield at Bennett Rink on Wednesday.
The Green Knights were coming off a 5-1 win over Hamden on Saturday. Prior to the Hamden game the Green Knights had gone 1-3 in their previous four starts.
“We wanted to play a lot of the game in their zone today,” Notre Dame-West Haven coach Tim Belcher said. “We did that and we finished some drives. They weren’t playing a lot of players so we used our speed and depth to take advantage of that in the game.
“Even during that stretch of games when we went 1-3 I thought we were playing well. But lately we’ve been playing great. Hopefully we’ll build on this and improve even more moving forward.”
The Green Knights (7-4) dominated play in the first period, outshooting the Lancers 10-3. Adams did his best to keep his team in the game with nine saves but one shot got by him late in the period.

Zack Dumas scored a power-play goal off a shot from the left circle to give the Green Knights a 1-0 lead with 1:18 to go in the first period.
The second period was similar to the first with the Green Knights dominating and outshooting the Lancers 12-7. But Adams kept the Lancers in the game with 11 saves and allowed only one goal.
Defenseman Kevin Millea’s rising slap shot from inside the left circle flew inside the left post to give the Green Knights a 2-0 lead with 1:01 left in the second period.
The Lancers (6-4) had one of their best chances to score in the game when Austin Allen had an open shot about eight feet in front of the net. Crowley made a stick save to keep his shutout in tact.
Michael Ansaldo wasted no time padding the Green Knights’ lead at 3-0 exactly 2 minutes into the third period. Bencivengo finished the Green Knights scoring with a pair of power-play goals at 4:40 and at 11:12 for the 5-0 final.
“This was a team effort by everyone today,” Bencivengo said. “We were winning the puck battles and our offense scored some big goals. My teammates really were the reason I scored two goals, giving me great passes and allowing me to get in position to score. We also played solid on defense too.
“We have been improving and we’re building confidence off each of these past two wins. After each game the key is to focus on the next game, one game at a time. It’s similar to tonight when their goalie was making so many saves. We weren’t frustrated by that because goalies are always going to make saves. What you do is after the goalie makes a save you keep working to get that next shot and then the next shot to keep producing chances to score.”
Overall the Green Knights ended up outshooting the Lancers 36-19.
