WINSTED >> In a tale of two halves the Northwestern Highlanders took advantage of its chances and put away the Gilbert Yellowjackets, 2-0 under the lights at Walker Field on Tuesday night.
“Our biggest issue was finishing,” said Northwestern head coach Jared Stotler. “We were able to finish a couple of our opportunities.”
The first half saw both teams battle for possession, as they were feeling each other out.
“The first half was a little rough, we didn’t play as a team,” said Northwestern’s senior Jaiden Dropick.
But when the chance arose to break to scoreless tie it was Dropick who finished giving the Highlanders a 1-0 lead, off a pretty pass from senior, Morgan Gillette.
“I took advantage of an opportunity, it was a great pass,” said Dropick.
After the half, two different teams took the field, a more consistent and focused team in Northwestern (2-5).
“We’ve been talking about being focused,” said Stotler. “We did a good job of that in the second half.”
On the other side was a slowed down sloppy team in Gilbert.
“In the first half we played at 100%,” said Gilbert head coach, Nikki Hoxie. “In the second half we died down.”
The Highlanders were able to take advantage of that and were able to pull away in the second half, as Kaitlyn Deming put some bend on her shot and scored from a hard spot on the field to give Northwestern a 2-0 lead.
“We used the width of the field,” said Dropick of her teams play in the second half. “We communicated more; we had better passes that weren’t sloppy. We had better energy and wanted it more.”
Both teams, where only three miles separate them, left the field with positives and some things to work on.
“This was one of the best games we played this season,” said Hoxie. “We played more like a team.”
For Northwestern they hope to stay on the winning track if they want to have a strong rest of the season.
“It’s a win,” said Stotler. “I hope to take the positives. We have to win the rest of our games if we want to get into the tournament.”
