NORTH HAVEN—It didn’t take long for the Amity football team to serve notice that North Haven would have its hands full with the Spartans on Wednesday. Amity’s Michael Young scored on a 77-yard touchdown run on the second play of the game to set the tone.
Despite the Amity effort, the Indians defense came through in the last two minutes of the game and Devan Brockamer and Shamus Meehan each combined for a pair of touchdowns as North Haven held on for a 28-26 SCC interdivision win at Vanacore Field.
North Haven qualifies for the Class L playoffs and will face a yet-to-be-determined opponent and site in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Trailing 28-26, Amity had a first and goal at the 7 yard line with 1:30 to go in the game. There was a fumble on the snap and Young fell on the ball for a loss back to the 25 yard line. Young ran the ball on the next play and brought it to the 20. Another fumble on the snap pushed the ball back to the 24. On fourth down, Young was sacked, North Haven took over and ran out the clock.
“You have to give Amity all the credit, they got their kids ready for this game,” North Haven coach Anthony Sagnella said. “We didn’t do a good job of preparing our kids. The key for us tonight was our defense. The defense came through when it really had to late in the game.
“Getting to the playoffs again is a big accomplishment for this team. We need to get our players ready.”
In the first quarter, Young broke two tackles and bolted down the right sideline for a 77-yard touchdown and a Joe Digello 2-point rush gave the Spartans an 8-0 lead.
The Indians responded with three straight touchdowns.
Brockamer broke up the middle for his 32-yard touchdown run (2-point pass failed) with and Meehan found Brockamer in the right end of the end zone for a 26-yard touchdown pass (2-point rush failed) with 3:48 to go in the first quarter for a 12-8 North Haven lead.
Meehan padded the lead, sweeping left for a 7-yard touchdown and Brockamer’s 2-point rush made it 20-8 Indians with 9:35 to go in the second quarter.
“We didn’t take Amity lightly, they played so well and you’ve got to give them credit,” said Brockamer, who earned the game’s MVP trophy. “It was important to finally get the lead at 12-8. But the real key was our defense. They stepped up in a big way for us tonight.”
Amity responded on the last possession of the half. As time expired in the second quarter, Amity quarterback Max Dempsey found Young for a 5-yard touchdown pass. The rush failed making it 20-14 at halftime.
The third quarter was uneventful until the final minutes.
As time expired in the third quarter, Albert Hooks sprinted down the right sideline for a 45-yard touchdown, Brockamer added a 2-point rush and the Indians led 28-14.
In the fourth quarter, two North Haven turnovers would make the game interesting.
Amity recovered a fumble on the North Haven 10 yard line and four plays later Young connected with Nico Semmonella for a 14-yard touchdown pass. The 2-point rush failed to trim the Indians lead to 28-20.
On North Haven’s next possession, another fumble recovery by Amity set up the Spartans on their own 38. Five plays later Young found Semmobnella again for a 16-yard touchdown pass. Young’s rush failed and North Haven’s lead was only 28-26.
On Amity final possession, a pass interference call followed by another flag gave the Spartans a first down at the North Haven 27. A pass play to Semmonella gave Amity their first and goal at the 7 but the drive would fizzle out.
“We played hard, the kids so hard, I couldn’t ask for any more of them,” Amity coach Craig Bruno said. “It was a total up and down game. We couldn’t finish that last drive, but I’m so proud of our guys.”
