FAIRFIELD—Winning one title is a wonderful accomplishment. To repeat as a league champion speaks volumes about the character of a team.
The New Canaan High School girls golf team didn’t allow the giant target on their backs dissuade the Rams from their mission Thursday. New Canaan took home another plaque for the trophy case by capturing the 2018 FCIAC Girls Golf Team Championship at Fairchild Wheeler Black Course.
“To repeat as champions means so much,” said New Canaan senior captain Lauren Capote. “We had graduated a talented senior and added a talented freshman this season. I’m so proud of the consistency of our group. It’s incredible for us to pull off winning back-to-back FCIAC Championships.”
In a field of five teams and 31 golfers in total, New Canaan amassed a score of 334 (take top four of five scores) to hold off team runnerup Warde (350). Ludlowe (372) was third followed by Greenwich (381) and Ridgefield (400).
New Canaan and Warde were FCIAC East Division co-champions in the regular season.
Leading the way for New Canaan was Meghan Mitchell, who fashioned a one-over-par 74 from the red tees (5234 yards) of the Fairchild Wheeler Black Course.
“I just tried to stay calm out there. I didn’t overthink things too much,” Mitchell said. “My putting was solid even though the greens were a bit slower than what we usually play on. I had no 3-putts which was key. My short game was great as well.”
Warde junior Jessica Nuzzaci —playing in the final threesome with Mitchell—was runnerup in the medalist race at 77. Last year’s medalist and the 2018 FCIAC Player of the Year, Greenwich’s Sydney Nethercott posted an 83 Thursday.
“Playing with two tremendous golfers (Mitchell, Nethercott) pushed me to be better,” Nuzzaci said. “And all the rounds I’ve played at Great River (in Orange) prepared me very well for this event. Meghan (Mitchell) was incredible. Our team (Warde) did our best but New Canaan was a little better. We’ll be back next year.”
It was a team victory for New Canaan. Senior captain Capone shot 85, freshman Julia Bazata had an 87 and Morgan Hibbert checked in at 88. Caroline Addeo had a 112 for the Rams.
“Even with three returnees, the team chemistry was new. The whole season someone different stepped up each match,” said New Canaan coach Priscilla Schulz. “The girls had each others’ backs. Meghan (Mitchell) stood on her head today. When she just plays, she can compete with anybody. I’m still in shock about repeating. The girls did the work. They deserve this so much.”
