Sophia Bastek won’t forget her first appearance for the Greenwich High School girls soccer team.
A freshman, Bastek came off the bench to score in the 71st minute, giving the Cardinals a 1-0 road win over Norwalk Monday in an FCIAC matchup.
“It was her first touch on the ball and she scored,” GHS coach Simon Rumbold said. “She had been on the JV team before coming up to varsity.”
The win was the second straight for the Cardinals. Isabella Tramposch, Aubrey Dyckman and Megan Murphy also helped lead the team’s solid play. Katie Large made three saves for the Cardinals’ first shutout of the season.
The Brunswick School soccer team earned its first win of the season Saturday, upending The Gunnery, 6-0, on the road.
Aidan Williams recorded a hat trick during a three-minute span in the second half to spark the Bruins (1-4-1). Nick Boardman opened the scoring for the Bruins, tallying in the third minute.
Lopez’s unassisted goal gave the Bruins a 2-0 lead in the 23rd minute. Williams scored the first of his three goals in the 66th minute. One minute later, Williams struck again shortly after a corner kick. Another Williams goal followed a minute later, as he scored off a feed from Lopez.
SACRED HEART SOCCER
Two goals from Amelia Sheehan lifted the Tigers to a 2-0 win over FAA foe Hamden Hall on Monday.
Sheehan’s first goal came in the 20th minute off a pass from Erin Cleary. Her second tally was set up by Fernanda Serna in the 70th minute. Julia Spiegel made 13 saves for Sacred Heart (4-5).
SACRED HEART VOLLEYBALL
The Tigers posted a 3-0 win over Holy Child in an FAA matchup.
Sacred Heart won the match by game scores of 25-17, 25-20, 25-20. The first set saw the Tigers come back from a 10-1 deficit. Ellie McKenney had 16 kills and 27 digs, while Laura Holland had 12 kills 19 assists, 16 digs and three aces.
Sofia Piriz (20 service points) and Kellie Ulmer (23 digs, kills) also paced the victors (5-4).
GREENWICH ACADEMY VOLLEYBALL
The Gators suffered a 3-0 loss to Hotchkiss School, dropping the match by game scores of 25-12, 25-15, 25-18. Casey Gottlieb had four kills and three aces, while Megan Belcastro added two kills.
Madlin Decker contributed three aces, two kills and seven digs for GA.
